Finding Purpose at the Crossroads of Passion and Service: Celebrating 100 Episodes of HeartBalm Healing
Dearest HeartBalm’ers and Friends,
This episode marks the 100th HeartBalm Healing podcast and newsletter that I’ve shared. It is a huge milestone for me and I am filled with gratitude for each and every one of you that has joined me on this journey of healing and self-discovery.
With this 100th episode, I’d like to dive into the beautiful way this little HeartIdea has grown and blossomed into a 2+ years and still-growing project of self-love, healing, and service. Born out of a deep need to heal, HeartBalm became a lifeline toward believing in, nurturing, and loving myself more, evolving and healing, and opening my heart to share deeply vulnerable personal truths to bring light to the darkness.
It is a promise that I made to myself over 40 years ago to find wholeness and peace within myself, to heal the pain, and trauma that comes with CPTSD, and to move from surviving to truly thriving. What began as a personal passion evolved into a quest to help others, and to ease the suffering of those, who like me, are questioning life, searching for meaning, and seeking ways to come closer to themselves, heal deeply, and nurture their own path toward self-love and peace.
The only way to do great work is to love what you do.
And this brings us to the heart of today’s 100th episode – finding our purpose at the intersection of passion and service. As I look back on the journey that led me here, I am reminded of how purpose often unfolds in unexpected ways. It starts with a simple desire to heal ourselves, but as we dive deeper, we discover that our true purpose lies not just in our own healing, but in how we can use our experiences to serve others.
When one heals, we all heal.
Finding our purpose is often portrayed as a daunting quest, a lifelong journey filled with uncertainty and self-discovery. Yet, the idea that our purpose lies at the intersection where our authentic passion meets the needs of others offers a beautifully simple and profound path to fulfillment. Could it be that the answer to the age-old question, "What am I here to do?" is not hidden in grand ambitions, materialistic pursuits, or some distant, unreachable place, but rather in the things that light us up, and bring us joy – our passions – and how we can use them to uplift those around us.
This concept of finding purpose at the intersection of passion and service is a beautiful one, filled with love and healing. It suggests that our lives have a meaning that transcends personal achievement or success. Our true purpose is not about us alone – it is about how we can use what we love to make the world a better place. When we serve others through our passions, we create ripples of positivity, touching lives in ways we may never fully understand.
The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.
Think about the times in your life when you felt most whole and fulfilled. Chances are, those moments were not about what you received, but about what you gave. There were moments when you shared your gifts with others, when you made someone else’s life a little brighter, a little easier. These are your destiny points – those pivotal moments where your path intersects with the needs of others, where your presence, actions, or words have a profound impact. Destiny points are not random; they represent an individual’s unique purpose and life path, serving as a guiding force throughout our lives. They are opportunities to fulfill a greater purpose, to step into a role that only you can play.
I remember a specific moment on my own healing journey when I realized that HeartBalm was more than just my musings, and confession of my healing journey on a page. It was after I received a letter from a subscriber who shared how much one of my episodes helped them navigate a dark period in their life. That was a destiny point for me – a moment where my passion for healing and my desire to help others intersected in a way I couldn’t have foreseen. It was a reminder that sometimes, the most powerful impact we have on others is simply by showing up and sharing our truths.
What about your destiny points? Have there been moments when you felt called to share your gifts in service to others? These moments don’t have to be monumental or dramatic. They could be as simple as offering a kind word to someone in need or using your talents to make someone’s life a little easier. It’s in these moments that we step into our unique purpose – one that only we can fulfill.
The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.
Understanding and embracing these destiny points requires us to stay attuned to the world around us, and to be present and aware of the needs of others. It asks us to be open to the idea that our purpose may not always be about self-fulfillment but about serving others. And, in this service, we find a deeper, more enduring sense of accomplishment, one rooted in connection, compassion, and the realization that we are all part of something much larger than ourselves.
The beauty of finding purpose in this way is that it transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. Suddenly, every action, no matter how small, becomes infused with meaning. The daily routines that might otherwise feel tedious take on new significance when seen as part of a larger, purposeful journey. Even the challenges we face can be reframed as stepping stones that bring us closer to our true purpose.
Moreover, when passion and service come together, they create a powerful ripple effect. Your passion, when shared, inspires others. It ignites a chain reaction of positivity and creativity, encouraging others to discover and act upon their own passions. This interconnectedness is where the real magic happens. By finding and living your purpose, you contribute to a collective upliftment, raising the vibration of those around you and contributing to the betterment of the world as a whole.
This idea also highlights the intrinsic value of each person’s uniqueness. No two people will have the same combination of passions and talents, which means that each person’s contribution to the world is unique and irreplaceable... and necessary! When you find that point where your passion meets service, you are stepping into a role that only you can fulfill. You are bringing something into the world that would not exist without you.
In a world that often measures success by external achievements, this approach to finding purpose reminds us that true success is measured by how we make others feel, by the love we share, and by the positive impact we have on the lives of those we touch. It’s about knowing that, at the end of the day, you have made a difference in someone’s life simply by being who you are and sharing what you love.
There is a poem by Mary Oliver that speaks to the heart of this journey – of finding purpose. It often emerges out of curiosity, and the awe and wonder we find in the small and simple things of life – or the destiny point of a grasshopper meeting you poignantly in a walk through a field.

Will you let your passions guide you? Will you allow your heart’s deepest desires to lead you into service, into the lives of others, where your light can shine brightest?
As we continue on this journey together, let’s remember that our purpose is not just a destination or a meeting point but a continuous unfolding of love, healing, and service. Let’s embrace each HeartMoment as an opportunity to make a difference, knowing that our efforts, no matter how small, have the power to touch hearts and transform lives.
